Is it time for my first hire?

The first hire is the most distorted decision in a small company. You are drowning, so everything looks like a reason to hire, and you are the bottleneck, so every candidate looks like relief.

Hire too early and you burn runway teaching someone a job you have not defined. Hire too late and you cap the company at the size of your own calendar. Both mistakes are invisible from inside the workload.

How a board meeting attacks this decision

In an Elevate board meeting, this question is not answered by one voice. Each advisor comes at it from the seat a bigger company would pay an executive to hold:

  • CHRO: Forces the role definition first: which recurring hours move off your plate, and is that a full role or a contractor's Tuesday.
  • CFO: Prices the hire honestly: fully loaded cost against the revenue those freed hours must produce, with a date by which it has to be true.
  • COO: Checks the system the hire lands in. A hire without a process inherits your chaos and returns it with interest.
  • CSO: Asks the uncomfortable version: is this hire buying growth, or buying relief? Both are legitimate. They are different purchases.

What that sounds like in the room

Chief Human Resources Officer

List the hours you would hand over next Monday. If you cannot name ten, we are hiring for hope, not for work.

Chief Financial Officer

At a $58k fully loaded cost, the freed hours need to produce roughly $5k of monthly revenue by month four. Say it out loud and see if you still believe it.

And what you walk away with

Every meeting ends with a written verdict: the decision, the risks named out loud, and action items with owners. For a decision like this one, that looks like:

Hire a part-time delivery contractor now; revisit the full-time hire when contracted hours exceed 60 per month for two consecutive months. Next steps on your list: write the role scorecard this week and set the trigger metric that reopens the decision.

Your board also remembers it. At your next meeting, the advisors know what you decided, what worried you, and what you committed to, and they will ask.
